Lake Buchanan Texas
Highland Lakes Second Largest Body of Water

Buchanan Dam, Texas, weather forecast

Boating on Lake Buchanan

Lake Buchanan is very popular with boaters, campers, fishermen, and swimmers. People of all ages make the trip to enjoy everything the Texas Hill Country has to offer. One major benefit of being on a lake this large is that you'll never feel crowded. There's always plenty of elbow room on each of the Highland Lakes.

Lake Buchanan has a unique feature you won't find at the other Highland Lakes. There are granite gravel shores along portions of the lake that provide an ideal beach for swimming, wading and sunbathing.

The Lake Buchanan picture above is of a privately owned lighthouse that is near Buchanan Dam.  It can be seen as you drive along at the south end of Lake Buchanan on Hwy 29.

Lake Buchanan History and Facts

Lake Buchanan is the 2nd largest of the Highland Lakes in Central Texas with a length of 30 miles and a width at the widest point of just under 5 miles. Lake Buchanan also has an astounding 124 miles of shoreline.

Lake Buchanan was formed by the construction of the Buchanan Dam. When it was built in 1938, Buchanan Dam was considered to be the longest multiple-arch dam in the U.S. with a length of just over two miles. The lake and dam were named after U.S. Representative J.P. Buchanan.

Lake Buchanan is located 60 miles northwest of Austin and 95 miles north of San Antonio. It's about 200 miles south of Dallas/Fort Worth and 200 miles west of Houston.
